FRONTIERS in Hildesheim

One year ago Sudanese refugees and students from Hildesheim and Jena startet an association to support human rights work in Sudan. At it´s first birthday this special association invites everybody who is interested to come to the Trillke Gut in Hildesheim for presentations and discussions about the current situation in Sudan and about developmental and asylum politics. In the evening we will have a party and concert together!

 Frontiers will be part of the exibition on Saturday, 8th of Septermber.

Surprise in Karlsruhe: gold extra meets Peter Weibel

We were invited to present the Final Edition of Frontiers at the media museum of ZKM Karlsruhe. We've got a lot of press and some very nice introductory speeches by Bernhard Serexhe, ZKM's chief curator, but we were also in for some surprise as legendary artist and curator Peter Weibel showed up to get up to date with Frontiers. Charlie, Sonja, Jens and Tobias were eagerly cramming hours of information in small digestible bits, while Martina did a show run in the game. In his own words, Weibel: Brilliant. Wonderful. Don't run so fast young lady, I'm getting all dizzy.

The game is in the permanent exhibition „World Of Games“ - themselves ranging from Pong to Frontiers - for some more years.

Presentation of our Final-Frontiers-Version at ZKM Karlsruhe

forteresse Europe »
Frontiers est un détournement du jeu vidéo de guerre Half Life 2. Le projet met en scène la situation à la frontière entre l’Union européenne et le Maroc, dans les enclaves espagnoles (situées sur le territoire marocain) de Ceuta et Melilla. Ces confettis d’Europe en terre d’Afrique sont ceints de barrières militarisées (barbelés, miradors, ...) destinées
à empêcher les migrants venus de toute l’Afrique de pénétrer en Europe. Régulièrement, des dizaines de migrants tentent de passer et sont violemment repoussés. Le jeu détourné permet de prendre connaissance de cette réalité peu médiatisée en Europe, en jouant soit un migrant essayant de franchir la frontière, soit un militaire essayant de pourchasser les migrants.
Présentation et démonstration du jeu par les créateurs Tobias Hammerle et Martina Brandmayr (Autriche) suivie d’un débat.

Frontiers at Symposium - Stadttheater Bremerhaven

Die globalisierte Welt setzt Menschen in Bewegung. Nach Schätzungen der International Organization for Migration (IOM) leben heute mehr als 200 Millionen Menschen in einem Land, das nicht ihre ursprüngliche Heimat ist - Tendenz steigend. Immer mehr Menschen arbeiten in unterschiedlichen Ländern oder müssen aufgrund politischer oder gesellschaftlicher Bedingungen ihr Land verlassen: Gründe auszuwandern gibt es viele.

Diese Entwicklungen stellen den traditionellen Begriff von Heimat als Basis einer scheinbar unveränderlichen Identität grundlegend in Frage. Doch was bedeutet es, mehrere Heimaten zu haben? Welche Chancen bieten Transnationalisierungsprozesse? Sind die urbanen Inseln der globalen Wirtschaftseliten die eigentlichen Parallelgesellschaften? Wie globalisieren und vermischen sich lokale Eigenheiten? Und was hat das alles mit Theater zu tun?

Im Symposium werden diese und andere Fragen in Expertenpanels mit Wissenschaftlern und Künstlern diskutiert. Zusätzlich finden Publikumsgespräche mit den Künstlern direkt im Anschluss an die Aufführungen des Festivals statt.

Vortrag und Game-Präsentation
Frontiers lässt die dramatische Situation an den Grenzen anhand der Stationen zweier Fluchtrouten nach Europa durchleben. In der Rolle des Flüchtlings oder Grenzsoldaten gelangen die Spieler in die Sahara, an das algerische Hoggar-Gebirge, an den Zaun in Ceuta, an einen spanischen Strand oder an den Hafen von Rotterdam.
Der Produktion an dem Spiel ging eine intensive Recherchephase zu Hintergründen von Migration und der Situation von Flüchtlingen an den europäischen Grenzen vor allem in Spanien und der Ukraine voraus. Das Team von Frontiers besuchte die spanische Exklave Ceuta, andalusische Städte und die ukrainisch-slowakische Grenzregion um Uschgorod. Zahlreiche Gespräche mit Flüchtlingen, Bewohnern der jeweiligen Gegenden, mit Hilfsorganisationen, staatlichen Vertretern oder anderen Medieninitiativen bilden den Hintergrund zum Spiel. Reale Fakten, Orte, Schicksale werden in die Spielrealität übersetzt. So kann Frontiers den Dialog über Flucht und Migration auf neuen Plattformen eröffnen.
Frontiers kann als Spiel politische Fragen wie Migration und Flucht nicht lösen. Die Produzenten wollen jedoch mit dem Spiel und der Website konkrete geographische Räume und politische Felder in unserer Erinnerung verankern, um uns die Information über die Situation der Migranten über die gelegentliche Katastrophenmeldung hinaus wahrnehmen und aufnehmen zu lassen.
